"What return address you gonna put on the envelope," asked Dan Daubenmire, who by now was known as the one-armed tree-hugger."
"How 'bout just "The Tree," said Darryl and that's all he put in the upper left hand corner of the manila envelope that contained the first 65 letters they sent in. As an afterthought Darryl added a little drawing of a tree doodled ominously under the two-word return address. "That should make it pretty clear," Dan said.
Well, the three rallies and the annual Steelworker District gathering all went great. Mike Wolfinger, Dan Daubenmire, Local 341 President Gary Sites and Darryl Cherney all spoke on behalf of unity between Steelworkers and environmentalists, and urged people to sign the letter. And they did. By the hundreds. From all over the state. Mike and Darryl raised their hands high together in solidarity at the final rally at the Kaiser gate. And more people signed letters.
With all the steelworker gatherings, plus lots of people coming out of the woodwork to gather signatures, the Prosecuting Attorney was looking at nearly 700 letters before the week was over. They were coming in via fax, mail, hand delivery and carrier pigeon. This surely was the most famous tree in Licking County.
